Research: Software Analysis

I have done so much research on the technical and genre conventions of romcoms but I still haven't really researched how to create a romcom. Since Zunairah and I are not rich companies, we have to settle with simple editing software. There are multiple editing software for us to use but I want to use the best choice that will help me and Zunairah film the best product!

Editing Software:

The editing software I have found are DaVinci Resolve, Filmora, and Premiere Pro. I will investigate all of these options to find out which is the best!

DaVinci Resolve:

DaVinci Resolve is praised for its advanced color grading capabilities, and it is often used in professional filmmaking. Color is an important feature of romcoms. However, its interface is more complex and better suited for projects that prioritize heavy cinematic color correction. While color grading is important, our rom-com project focuses more on storytelling, pacing, and emotional connection. Additionally, since I have less experience using DaVinci Resolve, it would unfortunately slow down the editing process.

From these 2 screen shots alone, you can see all of the coloring feature DaVinci has to offer. You can tell that it is a more coloring focused software. Even though romcoms heavily rely on color, that is not the only feature about them that makes them unique. I feel like Zunairah and I wouldn't achieve all we wanted with DaVinci.

Filmora:

Through my research, Filmora is very beginner-friendly. However, it it too much for beginners. For example, it lacks the professional tools for advanced audio control or complex timelines. Without these our romcom would not feel like a romcom and it would lack storytelling. We want our romcom to feel thoughtful made and authentic but I believe Filmora would hold us back.

As you can see, Filmora does not offer many advanced tools to create a detailed project. Filmora relies heavily on preset effects, transitions, and color filters, which can make edits feel generic rather than intentionally crafted. For our romcom, we want the freedom to make intentional editing choices that support narrative and emotion, rather than relying on pre-made templates Filmora offers.

Premiere Pro:

Adobe Premiere Pro is very adaptable and flexible. Premiere Pro supports a wide range of video, audio, and image file formats, which makes it easy to import footage from different cameras and sources without technical issues. This can be especially useful for us because Zunairah and I are going to record from different devices to implement important camera shots. It is easy to control pacing, cuts, transitions, and layering on Premiere Pro. This is extremely important for rom-coms because comedic moments depend heavily on timing, while romantic scenes rely on smooth pacing and emotional flow.

Premiere Pro is known for its audio editing. Dialogue, background music, and ambient sound all help shape the mood of a scene. Premiere Pro allows editors to easily adjust audio levels, clean up dialogue, and balance sound so that emotional beats are effective.

Best Pick/Self Reflection:

Researching different editing software made me realize how much the choice of tools affects the quality and style of a film. I learned that while programs like DaVinci Resolve and Filmora have their strengths, they would not fully support the storytelling, pacing, and emotional tone needed for a rom-com. DaVinci Resolve focuses heavily on color, and Filmora relies on presets that limit creative control, which could make our project feel generic.

In my opinion, I think the best choice is Premiere Pro. The reason I think it would be the best choice is because of its range of editing tools it offers. We can work with multiple layers of video, color, and audio, allowing for careful control over pacing, transitions, and scene structure.  Its color adjustment features support mood-building easier by making fine-tune brightness, contrast, and color balance accessible, which enhances the tone of romantic and comedic scenes.

While Premiere Pro does have a learning curve and requires a capable device, these factors are outweighed by its creative flexibility and professional output.  However, I do have a bit of experience with Premiere Pro. My experience is one of the main reasons for choosing it.  I am already familiar with the interface and tools; This lets me focus more on storytelling, creativity, and refining details more instead of learning new software. This saves time and allows the brief to feel more polished and intentional.

Even if I get lost, there are always tutorials I can watch to understand how it works. Any drawbacks about Premiere Pro I have personally experienced, meaning that I can surpass the struggle. I believe that Premiere Pro would let me and Zunairah create the best product.
